中英文諺語

諺語是民間流傳的常語，常帶有豐富的知識、經驗、思想與教育意義。

中文諺語流傳久遠，雖然大多以口語方式表現，但其對人們的影響可能不亞於四書五經。反觀英語諺語，它是一種西方傳統的格言，它們通常是簡短又隱含智慧的句子，且經常會被人所引用。

與我們所使用的英語諺語也和環境有關，例如，農村流傳下來的諺語會用到跟農業相關的語言，而漁村的諺語通常會與大海有關。

雖然中英文化、語言的差異無人能夠否認，但許多生活的經歷是互通的，這也造成了中英文中，人們可看到此兩種文化使用不同的諺語來敘述相同的概念的事情。細細品味其中不同語言的表達方式，是極其享受的一件事。

以下我們就來舉例幾個有趣的範例：

“New brooms sweep clean”（直譯：新買的掃帚最給力），意味著人們進入新的角色後常會有股莫名的衝勁，沒錯，此諺語的意思也就是耳熟能詳的「新官上任三把火。」

“The leopard cannot change its spots”（直譯：豹子的斑點永不變），是否有點猜不透其的意思？其實它就是我們常說的「江山易改，本性難移。」

“In the country of the blind, the one-eyed man is king”（直譯：在盲人之國，獨眼人為王），這個可能就比較好猜了，沒錯，就是「山中無老虎，猴子稱大王」或「蜀中無大將，廖化作先鋒」的意思。

而中英文意思相近但說法相異的諺語還包括以下範例：

Diamond cuts diamond：棋逢對手。

Extremes meet：物極必反。

Gather ye rosebuds while ye may：花開堪折直須折 莫待無花空折枝。

Seeing is believing：百聞不如一見。

Let bygones be bygones：既往不究。

Once bitten, twice shy：一朝被蛇咬，十年怕草繩。

Experience is the best teacher：不經一事，不長一智。

Take things as they come：既來之則安之。

Water is a boon in the desert, but the drowning man curses it：水能載舟；亦能覆舟。

When one door shuts, another opens：天無絕人之路。

A miss is as good as a mile：失之毫釐，差之千里。

Give a thief enough rope and he’ll hang himself：多行不義必自斃。

然而，在比較中英文諺語時，也不乏看完英文就能猜出中文意思的諺語，舉例如下：

Practice makes perfect：熟能生巧。

Great minds think alike：英雄所見略同。

Better be the head of a dog than the tail of a lion：寧為雞首，不為牛後。

Don’t judge a book by its cover：不要以貌取人。

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder：情人眼裡出西施。

Two heads are better than one：三個臭皮匠，勝過一個諸葛亮。

The blood of the soldiers makes the glory of the general：一將功成萬骨枯。

A word once spoken can never be recalled：一言既出，駟馬難追。

Strike while the iron is hot：打鐵趁熱。

Do in Rome as the Romans do：入鄉隨俗。

All things are difficult before they are easy：萬事起頭難。

All good things must come to an end：天下無不散之筵席。

Give him an inch and he will take a yard：得寸進尺。

Man proposes, God disposes： 謀事在人，成事在天。

A poor man’s tale cannot be heard： 人微言輕。

Better the devil you know than the devil you do not know：明槍易躲，暗箭難防。
